Gothicized Italic is a broad-edged calligraphy style developed by Edward Johnston (1872-1944) in the mid-1920s, initially known as “Compressed Hand” and “Heavy Italic.” This script features a compressed, pointed oval form and can be written either upright or with a slight slope. This script is particularly effective for wedding invitations, formal documents, and some poetry.

For students who have never tried the Gothicized Italic style before (or are complete beginners), you will discover that it is one of the most beautiful and practical calligraphic styles. No prior experience in calligraphy or lettering is required—just a lot of patience and enthusiasm! This class is an excellent choice for complete novices as well as those looking to refresh their skills.

YOU WILL LEARN:

  • An introduction to the materials and tools.
  • How to load a dip pen with ink.
  • Solutions to execution and ink flow issues.
  • Proper writing posture and pen grip.
  • The fundamental strokes for both lowercase and uppercase letters, with a comprehensive understanding of letter shapes.
  • Techniques for combining letters to form words and sentences.
  • How to transform fundamental strokes into various styles.
