Illumination gilding is a decorative art technique used primarily in manuscript creation, where gold or gold-like materials are applied to enhance the visual appeal of text and illustrations.

For students who have never tried Illumination Gilding before (or are complete beginners), you will discover that it is one of the most beautiful Medieval styles. No prior experience in calligraphy or lettering is required—just a lot of patience and enthusiasm! This class is an excellent choice for complete novices as well as those looking to refresh their skills.

 

YOU WILL LEARN:

  • An introduction to the materials and tools.
  • How to reconstitute gesso, laying gesso well, getting rid of air bubbles, tricks for making edges neat and precise and options for reshaping.
  • Tips and tricks for improving your gilding and suggestions for problem solving if your piece does not turn out quite as expected!
  • The use of transfer and loose gold leaf, demonstrate of how to use a gilding cushion and gilding knife, care of gilding equipment.
  • How and when to polish the gold leaf and also adding interest with basic tooling.
  • Vellum preparation and how to use them.
  • Colour theory, basic painting techniques and the use of a fluid writer.
  • Acanthus leaf drawing using Gouache paints.
  • The class will be kept small to allow plenty of opportunities for individual feedback.
  • Each student will take home with one piece of artwork by the end of the class.

LANGUAGE: 

Mainly in Cantonese 廣東話, supplemented with English handouts. Your instructor Cyrus Pang can also speak English and Chinese Mandarin.

 

WORKSHOP FEE:

  • A piece of A4 genuine vellum skin is included per student.
  • Other materials are not included in the workshop fee. You are welcome to bring your own tools; however, a material kit is available.

 

You will need to bring:

  • HB pencil or mechanical pencil to take notes
  • Coloured pen(s) n to take notes
  • Eraser
  • Ruler

 

Please note:

  • Participants must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Please note that workshop fees are strictly non-refundable.
  • If the minimum number of participants is not met, the class may be cancelled, and students will be notified via email two days before the start of the first class. In such cases, students can choose to receive a full refund or transfer to another workshop date.

About Your Tutor:

The mentor is a highly experienced Western calligrapher, boasting over 20 years in the field.

Cyrus, the teacher, has spent over 2 decades living and working in Australia. He was traditionally trained by multiple renowned calligraphy masters from around the world through direct, in-person instruction, including the likes of Jake Weidmann, Rachel Yallop, Toni Watts, and others.

A accomplished collaborator, Cyrus's work has worked with various international brands and organizations, such as Australian KitKat, Dulux paints, Valentino, and more.

With an exceptional teaching pedigree, Cyrus has imparted his calligraphic expertise to over a thousand students in both Chinese and English over the years.

In 2014, Cyrus established "Not Just A Card (Australia)" to spearhead the promotion of Western calligraphy in the country. This later led to the opening of a dedicated calligraphy specialty store in Melbourne. Cyrus's skills have also extended to the realm of medieval gilding and the crafting of unique decorative boxes.

Cyrus's calligraphic works have been proudly exhibited across Australia, Serbia, and Hong Kong. Notably, he is regarded as one of the few true professionals in Hong Kong capable of teaching multiple calligraphic styles, including Pointed, Broad, and Brush.
